Meanwhile, her ability to see how God works through the land, colour and imagination will remind you to pause and be present. Her reflections about her identity as an introverted pastor’s daughter and life as a woman of colour are compelling. It means we are treated to childlike ponderings, the isolation of becoming a young adult, and the heartbreak of adulthood. Comprised of poetry, artwork and essays, it takes us on a journey of self-discovery, ultimately reminding us that though this world is not our home, we can still find moments of hope in this place – scars and all.ĭivided into eight sections, each is themed around a US state she has travelled through at different times in her life. Given this, you can imagine how delighted I was when Christian publisher Tyndale brought out her anthology, How Far You Have Come. And once, I even commissioned her to create art for a friend’s birthday. Since then, I have ardently followed her work, inspired by her musings on God, hope and healing. Her words encouraging me to ‘Remember the mountains and valleys that got you here’ connected me to God in a way only anointed art can. When artist Morgan Harper Nichols’ first poem went viral on Instagram a few years ago, I assumed she had been writing poetry for years. ![]()
